At the tip of the peninsula is the Cabrillo National Monument which commemorates the site of the first European landing by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on the U.S. West Coast. Also, in this area, the Old Point Loma lighthouse is also a popular tourist site as one of the first eight light houses on the western coast.
Off the western coast of the peninsula and bordered by the north by Ocean Beach is Sunset Cliffs. Named for its beautiful sunsets, this 68 acre area runs along the Pacific Ocean and includes enormously high and beautifully sculpted cliffs which offer panoramic ocean views. Residents of Sunset Cliffs are affluent San Diegans who opt for a home with ocean views while remaining in close proximity of Downtown. The annual migration northward of approximately 26,000 gray whales can be viewed from the cliffs between late December till late February.
Along the eastern coast of the peninsula lies Roseville and La Playa which houses the Naval Training Center and military personnel. A new 361 acre waterfront community, Liberty Station is currently being developed at the site of the former Naval Training Center . The community development includes the three residential communities of Admiral Row, Beacon Row and Anchor Cove with a total of 349 residences which range from detached row homes and town homes. Liberty Station plans also includes the creation of a Civic, Arts and Cultural Center , a 46-acre park and a variety of retail endeavors.
