Mission Hills is located above Old Town on the gently sloping hills that overlook the San Diego harbor. The area of Mission Hills was home to many of San Diego's pioneers and many of the homes are historical. Mission Hills' name came from an investor in the early 1900's named George Marston. Architect Irving Gill designed many of the homes that are now beautifully preserved and renovated. There are California bungalows, craftsman homes, Spanish Revival and Mission-style homes and many other one of a kind residence.
Kate Sessions, the landscape artist for Balboa Park, started the Mission Hills Nursery over a century ago in the area and it still functions as the center of the neighborhood. In 1903 Kate Sessions began buying up land in Mission Hills. She chose this area because of its good soil, moist sea breezes and because it was so far away from everything. Washington and Goldfinch Streets are the commercial center of the neighborhood and provide residents with shopping and services. Small cafes and specialty retail shops line the streets and offer unique merchandise.
