Bounded by Washington and Laurel and by Park Boulevard and First Avenue, Hillcrest
is just north of downtown located in the uptown district. As San Diego 's first
suburb, erected by its first residents of bankers and bureaucrats, Hillcrest's
flavor changed as it was transformed into a bohemian alternative venue and has
since grown increasingly upscale.

Hillcrest's streets are lined with an eclectic array of shops. With award-winning restaurants, trendy cafes, and a diverse population of bookstores, antique shops, boutiques, galleries, and over-the-top markets, Hillcrest is a hip, urban place with a tight-knit, neighborhood feeling. Hillcrest's residences include a wide range of styles from older Victorians mixed in with newer apartments and condominiums. Part of the newer construction, completed in 1989, the Uptown District a 14-acre complex with mixed retail and residential has becoming a hugely popular place to live. In contrast with the upscale and yuppie, Uptown District, the newly built 16 unit Cable-Lofts provide condos for the more alternative in a red brick industrial building. Village Hillcrest, a recently built shopping plaza with under 800 underground parking places allows not only a neighborhood retail genre but also increased community fiscal prosperity through mass retail. Hillcrest is undoubtedly growing. Toward efforts at revitalization and remodernization, at Park Boulevard and University, CityMark is constructing the Egyptian an 80-unit residential complex ranging from 800 – 2200 square feet per unit. The streamline modern design of the Egyptian will be repeated in the Cairo , an 11 unit complex currently being constructed on Park.
